The colors of my life

Red:
When I think of the color red I think of my boyfriend Jon. His favorite color is red so every time I see the color it’s a nice reminder of how lucky I am. Red is also the color of a heart. So in a sense red makes me think of love. But more often then not when I see the color red I think of blood. I must say I am not a fan of the color red.

Blue:
When I think of blue I can’t help but think about the sky. Those lovely days when there’s not a cloud in sight and you’re out walking around in the sun. I also think of the ocean and how broad and vast it is. When I think of the ocean I feel like life has so many possibilities. The color blue is always nice. If however it is navy blue I think of the night sky. I think of lying out under the stars with someone I love and care about. I think about how long it would take to count every star in the sky.

Yellow:
When I think of yellow I see my mom. That’s her favorite color and it fits cause yellow is such a happy color and she always seems to be in a happy go lucky mood. Yellow also makes me think of the sun. I wonder how so much light can all come from the same place. Radiating over and warming everything below. I also think of baby chicks. I see them popping out of their eggs so ready to join the world.

Green:
When I think of green I think of life, of the earth and all the trees and plants. Hostas somehow always come to mind. I also find myself thinking of grass and the plants ability to never stop growing even after the plant is always being knocked down. It always just pops back up again.

White:
White makes me think of cleanliness, of heaven and of an empty sheet of paper. Like a new chapter waiting to be written. White also makes me think of clouds and how they are always so light and fluffy looking. Like cotton candy in the sky.

Black:
When I think of black I think of a big dark hole. Like a well that has no bottom, going straight though the earth out past china and into the sky. But always dark. I think of sleep and all the colors I see behind my eye lids and how they always end up turning back to black.

We Did It!

In my life I have been a lot of things, but this is my first, and probably my last, time I will ever be a national champion. After Happiness Inc, the varsity show choir at Kennedy High School, won nationals down in Nashville, Tennessee, the feelings going through me were crazy. I was happy, proud, excited, and even sad. This is what being a national champion means to me.
Being a national champion means that I along with the rest of my show choir have worked our butts off! It means that we have had the longest season ever stretching from July all the way to March. It means we never gave up and kept on trying to improve our show. We pushed the bounds of happiness up and over the sights we saw at the beginning of our season. Before it began, we only dreamed of the possibility to be national champions. Now that dream is a reality and we are all so happy for it.
Being in show choir is like having a second family. Being a national champion makes me proud of all my friends and makes me so happy for the years to come when we will reminisce about the glory days in Happiness Inc. This year we worked so hard and we managed to make it farther than any other Happiness group has gone before us. Being in Happiness Inc. of 2012 school year makes me proud to be a Kennedy student and it means that I have given my energy and attention over to something that is worth more than anything else they can offer us students in high school. It means we made life time friends, memories, records that other groups to follow us will strive to reach.
Being a national champion makes me sad. Now knowing that our season is over, we will forever miss the times and memories we have shared in 2012. Being in Happiness means that we will always have a connection to the people in our group, and even though were all sad that it's over, it will remain to be a “Happi” memory that none of us will soon forget. Knowing that half our group will be leaving at the end of this year makes us all sad. Nervous and excited, for us and them, to continue on knowing forever that we were the group that made it farther than any other happiness group had. Knowing that we made a bond that can never be broken.
Being a national champion makes me excited for next year. Although all the juniors will miss the leaving class, we are still so excited to see how the group will hold in next years season. We're excited to go back out with our heads held high knowing that we are one of the best. Knowing that it wasn’t easy to get to where we are now. We are excited to welcome all the new members who are lucky enough to achieve their goal and be a part of Happiness, Inc. next year. We are excited to go back out and work our butts off yet again trying to reach beyond the triumphs we reached this year
Over all, we have had a GREAT season. Better than any of us hoped for, and better than anyone was expecting. We have pushed the limits and now our name is one being said across the nation. We ended up on top, and now it's time to bask in the glory of our accomplishments. We did it, Happiness Inc. We did what no one thought we could do. We bounced back up when we fell and worked harder than any group at Kennedy has worked before. We did it. And that’s what it means to be a national champion.

Vera v.s. Coach part 2

Accessories:
When choosing between accessories my answer is clear. Vera Bradley has a very low selection of accessories. In fact, when clicking on the Accessories button on their page all that comes up is lap top cases and cosmetic bags, and in my opinion these are not accessories at all! However when clicking on the Coach Accessories button a wide variety of hats, scarves, fragrances, key chains, and pet accessories pops up! Now that’s what I call accessories! So my clear choice is Coach!

Luggage:
Under this category there is no competition! Literally! Coach doesn’t even have a travel or Luggage section on their web page! How can this be? Coach lovers must go on vacation sometimes! However Vera has multiple duffels, rolling luggage, dopp kits, luggage tags, and backpacks that make travel so much more fun and colorfully organized! So obviously my luggage allegiance is pledged to Vera! For now and forever more!

Apparel:
This category is just pathetic! Coach has an assortment of coats and jackets and that’s it! Not T-shirts or jeans, no tank tops or underwear! Coats and jackets is all they have to offer! But this offer is better than the one given by Vera for there is no apparel on that web page. Vera has nothing to wear on your body. Period. Not even jackets!

School:
Another Clear win for Vera. When looking at all the school options coming from her end you end up with laptop cases, dopp kits, pens, laundry bags, coffee mugs, blankets, picture frames, everything you could possibly need when getting ready to go off to college! Coach however is no comparison. All they have to offer is a dinky lap top case. LAME! How am I supposed to carry my laundry home in a laptop case! Selection is much too stingy!

Men:
The final category discussed on this blog is men. When browsing through Vera I see nothing manly enough to make it into a guy’s wish list! So unfortunately I must say that Vera looses this one. Coach has a variety of shoes and bags for men. Not to mention phadoras, key chains, wallets, and belts. So the win for the Men category goes to Coach!

Vera v.s. Coach

When someone asks me my two favorite brand names I have no problem finding my answer. It would defiantly be Vera Bradley and Coach! But I don’t know if I could say which I like better. I like them both for different reasons!

Shoes:
When I think of shoes I defiantly like coach better! Coach has a very wide variety of shoes such as boots, high tops, heels, exc.! The list goes on and on! Almost any style of shoe you could possibly want you can get in any color! Vera however only has flip flops! Although flip flops are great in the summer I really only wear them when going to the pool or beach! I, not being one to take a visit to the pool very often, find myself standing strong with Coach on this one.

Bags:
When it comes to bags, totes and clutches alike it is a very tough decision. I would probably have to say though that I prefer Vera bags. There are so many styles and patterns there are probably millions of combinations that could be made to personalize a bag to my style. I being a softy for options have to choose Vera. Coach though does have very good bags! I myself have quite a few purses and clutches at home. But the patterns aren’t as exciting and the variety just isn’t as broad. So Vera it is!

Sunglasses:
Although I don’t own Coach or Vera sunglasses I would have to say I am a Vera sunglasses fan. Most Coach sunglasses are quite big and chunky and I am much more a sleek sunglasses fan. I did come very close to buying a pair of Coach sunglasses once but now looking back and comparing them to the Vera sunglasses I want now I simply couldn’t go any way but Vera! The bold patterns and thin-rimmed glasses frames sore far above that of the chunky rimmed Coach sunglasses.

Floaters, Sinkers, and Skidders

Growing up in a family like mine you learn a lot of very different things. You may be thinking, yea so what my family knows fun facts too! But trust me! My family is especially knowledgeable on any topic most would think to be odd! One of my mothers favorite thing to talk about is Poop! She is a health freak so when she learned that you can use poop to gauge how healthy you are she dove right in!
Poop can be classified into three groups. There are the floaters, the sinkers, and the skidders! Now you may be thinking, floaters?..skidders? Well no worries! In due time you will be a poop expert!
Most people eat meat during every meal, every day! They think to themselves, well protein is good for you! So they just go right on eating. Animal after animal. Well im here to tell you your poop disagrees! Too much protein is not good for you! Have you ever looked in the toilet after taking a nice steamer and noticed its position in the water? No? well im here to tell you that it probably ALWAYS sinks down to the bottom of the toilet! this my friends is not good! When your poop sinks down to the bottom of the toilet it almost always means you have consumed too much protein! Protein is good to some extent but too much is just no good! Don’t belive me? Ask your poop!
The next kind of poop you may have is a skidder! Now when you think about skids they really aren’t a good thing! Weather its breaking to fast in your car or falling down on the cement, skids are never a good thing! Well my friend’s skids in the toilet are no different! When your deuce leaves skid marks while exiting the Lou it means you have eaten too much sugar! We all know sugar is bad for us so why do we continue to stuff ourselves will unhealthy sugary snacks? Well let me tell ya your poop wishes you would stop! Nothing ruins a good bowel movement more than looking down to find that your unhealthy life style is affecting your poop!
Now the most uncommon type of poop! A floater! If I had to guess I would think that right about now your thinking, wait a minute, my poop has never floated! Well to be honest most peoples don’t! But that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing! If you drop the kids off at the poop and you notice that they float, then that means you have been eating food that has a good balance of everything in it! Not too much protein, not too much sugar, just the perfect balanced diet! So floaters are good!
So next time you pop a squat on the john take a looksy after wards to see how healthy you really are! And remember “Floaters” good! “Sinkers” and “Skidders” bad!

So Many Choices

As high school students of the twenty first century we have so many things offered to us. There are so many different things we can do during our high school career, it really seems as if there is no limit.
At my high school you can be any person you want to be. We have something for everyone it just depends on what your interested in. For example If you like video games we have a actual video game club you could go to. If your more of a do gooder there is multiple volunteering clubs at school you could get involved with such as Interact club or key club. Or if these aren’t to you liking you can come to school and make your own club suitable to anything you like to do! We have so many options and this is only the beginning.
Also at my high school we have AP courses. You can take any you like and there are multiple in all different subjects! We have AP for government, economics, US history, Human Geography, World History, Music Theory, Psychology, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Language and Composition, the list goes on and on and these are only the beginning. You can be in any classes you want to and it’s all offered to us in high school.
Another thing you could do in high school is be involved in the arts. We have classes for choir in all grades, ceramics, sketching, show choir, select choirs, jazz band, band for all grades, orchestra, and again on and on goes the list. There’s so many things you couldn’t possible manages to do even half of them!
One very different thing offered by my high school is classes at Kirkwood community college. You can excel in high school and once you have gone as far as you can you can start taking college classes that go towards you getting your high school diploma! You can take classes for engineering and math or anything else you wish to excel in.
Most obviously high schools have sports. You can try any sport you want and most of them are offered at your school. You can do things from track to wrestling and cheerleading to football. It doesn’t matter what you want to do your school will most likely provide it.
High school allows us to find out who we are and what we like to do. It lets us excel in things and maybe even suck in things to. But without high school our lives would not be as diverse as they are in today’s world. We are lucky to have so many options.

VEG-HEAD THREE-BEAN CHILI

Welcome back to my blog! I hope all who tried out the Black Bean Burger had a successful experience and are ready to try out my absolute favorite vegetarian dish! This meal although very different from the Black Bean Burger is still very good and would just taste lovely on a chilly night.

VEG-HEAD THREE-BEAN CHILI

I know when most people think of a good tastin chili they think either lots of meat, lots of hot sauce, or lots of both! This recipe while not hot or meaty is still amazingly good! I never turn down a good bowl of vegetarian chili and this dish will just leave you wanting more. This recipe will make four good sized servings and everyone, vegetarian or not, is sure to enjoy it!

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive ore vegetable oil
1 medium yellow skinned onion, chopped
1 large red pepper, seeded and chopped
2 large green pepper, seeded and chopped
4 cloves garlic, crushed and chopped
1 cup pale beer or vegetable stock/broth
1 (32-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 (14-ounce) can black beans
1 (14-ounce) can dark red kidney beans
1 tablespoon ground cumin
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon cayenne hot pepper sauce, several drops
1 teaspoon coarse salt
1 can spicy vegetarian refried beans

The first thing to do would be to sauté onion, peppers, and garlic in the olive/vegetable oil. This should take about 3-5 minutes over moderate heat. Then add in the beer or broth, tomatoes, black beans, and the red kidney beans. Make sure to stir and combine the ingredients.

Now season the chili with the cumin, chili powder, hot sauce, and salt. To thicken the chili stir in the refried beans. Now just let the chili sit over low heat for 5 to 10 minutes longer and you are ready to serve.

BLACK BEAN BURGER

If you have read some of my previous blogs you probably know that I am I vegetarian. It will be three years this July since I made the switch from carnivore to herbivore but still I continue to feel happier than ever to be a vegetarian. Being a vegetarian in high school (pretty rare) I receive a lot of questions about what I eat. Of course there’s a lot of different things but I do have a few that I just love! Over the course of my next few blogs I will share with you some of my favorite vegetarian recipes.

BLACK BEAN BURGERS
Although out in the world there are plenty of different types of meatless burgers this black bean burger is defiantly one of my favorites. Another up side is that it is probably one of the healthier veggie burger options. This recipe makes 8 burgers and although they may not look like something you would like to eat, you cant judge a book by its cover.

Ingredients:

1, 15.5 ounce can of black beans, rinsed and drained
½ cup walnuts
½ cup sunflower seeds
½ small yellow onion, cut into quarters
3 garlic cloves
½ red bell pepper
1/3 cup wheat germ
2 TBSP whole wheat flour
½ TSP dried oregano
½ TSP dried basil
½ TSP ground cumin
½ TSP mild chili powder
½ TSP Celtic sea salt
½ TSP black pepper
1 ½ TBSP agave
1 TSP extra virgin olive ore grapeseed oil
dash cayenne pepper

Now that you know the ingredients all you have to do is just throw’em into a food processor and wait till they are blended but not too watery. It’s better if the mixture is a bit course.
To make the patties you must first cut out 4 by 4 inch squares of parchment paper. When this is completed put a 1/3 cup of the BLACK BEAN BURGER mixture in the center of each sheet. Then place another 4 by 4-inch piece of parchment paper on top of the BLACK BEAN BURGER mixture and press down so the patty will be about ½ inch thick.
Now you have the option to either cook you burgers or freeze them for a later date.
Now there is actually different ways you could go about cooking your burger. I my self prefer cooking them in the oven so that is the way I will share with you today. Place your burgers on a cookie sheet for 15 minutes at 400 degrees. (Time may vary if patties were frozen) Cooking your burgers this way will make them a bit firmer and easier to eat.
Now that your BLACK BEAN BURGERS are completed it is time to add all of your favorite burger toppings! Lettuce, pickles, and cheese are always a must!
Have a great meal! Bonne Apetite!

How to run your own mowing business

If you want to stop looking for coins in your cushions and start making money you should really go into the mowing business! This is the perfect way for someone to make money because a lot of people living in their nice new homes don’t know how to mow or are just to lazy to get of their butt for an hour and a half each week. The grass is always growing in the warmer months and that’s why mowing is a great job to have!
If you wish to start a mowing business you first have to get a lawn mower. Depending on if you buy one new or used, riding or push, they can really vary in cost. However don’t but whatever lawn mower you find that is cheaper. Depending on what kinds of lawns your going to mow is what kind of mower you need! If you will be mowing big open lots or the grass on a college campus you need a riding lawn mower. If however you will be mowing half acre lawns with trees and gardens I recommend a push. For smaller lawns riding lawn mowers can often just be a hassle because of their size.
Now that you have you have your mower you have to learn how to use it, if you don’t already know how. Unfortunately mowing isn’t something that’s very teachable over computer so just try it out a few times its easy once you get the hang of it. Always do a border around the entire thing and then do the inside in any direction you please. But make sure you don’t do the same direction every time because once you do it enough in one direction it could start tearing up the grass.
After you learn to mow you have to get your name out! I recommend business cards because they are fast easy and it will be easy for the client to find your number if they need to call you! So think of a funky name for your business and slogan and you’re on your way! For example my business is called the tinker bell lawn service. And my slogan, a wave of my wand and poof your grass is gone. If business cards aren’t for you try flyers or signs.
Finally you have your mower, the ability to mow, and you have clients, so now its time to start making money! I always do my bills in months so my clients know when they will be receiving their bill. Also you must decide what you will charge your clients. Always make it reasonable or you run the risk of loosing the client to a professional lawn service. If the lawn is of average size go about thirty dollars and then adjust from there. Now that you have everything you need you’re ready to go start your mowing. A check is just a month away!

How to be a national champion part 2

Finally its time for the competition season to begin. You must attend a few competitions before nationals just so you can see what the judges like and don’t like. Make changes to your show and always be looking for ways to make it better. The most important part of having a knock out show choir during competition season is being a good sport. You must always cheer for the other teams and standing O’s are a must even if you didn’t like the group’s show. You also always stand and clap when they are giving awards. You stand and give every group their moment because they worked just as hard if not harder than you. They deserve some applause.
Finally it’s time for nationals. Now how will you get there? You have to focus on raising money throughout the season because for some families it is very difficult to pay their Childs way through a show choir season. You must offer fundraisers and make as much money for the trip as possible to lower the cost for the students. If you cant afford to bring the entire group you obviously will not achieve your goal of winning national champs and having as much fun along the way as possible.
Now that your there it is completely essential that you remember everything you have ever worked on. You must give all the energy in your body over to the show and leave everything out on that stage. After day rounds you must remember everything the judges told you to work on and do as much as you can before finals to make them like you more than any other group at the competition. Don’t go crazy and change the entire show but just try and do something so that the judges will know you are trying to improve on the points they gave you.
The last step is accepting the awards. Now you have made it this far and you might get national champs you might not, so don’t let yourself get too cocky. When they announce awards always clap for everyone. You must be a great sport in order for people to like and respect your group. If they have come to the first runner up and you still have not been announced you can be excited but remember until your name is called you are cheering for they the other groups and not yourself. If the second place is announced and you have won you cannot cheer! Give the second place group their moment in the sun and let them be happy for their accomplishments. Finally when, and if, they yell your name for national champs you may cheer but remember that you must always congratulate the other groups when you see them. They worked hard too and everyone will have done a great job.

How to be a national champion part 1

Just last week the Kennedy High School show choir, Happiness Inc., achieved the title of National Champion! We attended the national show choir competition in Nashville, Tennessee, and came home with the first national championship in Happiness’s history. The season was so fun and successful but there are many important things we did along the way to achieve our goal. Anyone can be a national champ you just have to put in all the work.
Perhaps the most important part of preparing a show is having parents willing to back you up. They will be providing food, making costumes, and cleaning up after everyone so you must have some great adults willing to take on the job. You must also have parents who can help build props and who can be in charge of the Tec. crew. Although these are usually dads, moms can feel free to help too. The parents will be there for you throughout the entire season so you must grow to appreciate them and say thanks any time you can.
The Second step you must accomplish to win a national championship is you must have a great show. For the directors this can often be the hardest step because they have to determine what songs the show choir will sing. This is difficult because you always have to take the group into account. For example if you only have three tenors you cant pick a song that has a lot of tenor solo moments or where the tenors often have the melody. Also you have to be sure you pick songs that have the potential to have good choreography and wont wear out the singer dancers to quickly.
The next step in achieving a national championship is choreography. In order to win competitions in the light of making it to nationals you must have a great choreographer. Someone who stresses precision and doesn’t make moves so fast and hard that they are impossible to clean. They must devote as much time to the group as they need and choreography camps in the summer time are always a must in order to get the dance moves down.
Now comes the most important step. Singing. Even though show choir consists of singing and dancing, and you are scored on your singing dancing and band, singing is still by far the most important part. For example if you have an ok voice but a rocking dance ability you might not get in. if you have a fantastic strong voice but a very minimal dancing ability there is a much higher chance of you getting into a show choir. Singing is so important and you must have a great director who gives you lots of dynamics and tells you to grow on every single note. You must learn your songs and remember every little detail the director tells you to do.
One of the last steps is practice. Once you have learned all of the songs and choreography you must practice putting both together with a band. You have to clean till your arms hurt from holding them in a certain position for so long you have to pay attention and remember everything that is cleaned in rehearsal. You also must learn to add faces to the choreography! If you go through a song singing your heart out and dancing with all the energy you have you still just won’t cut it if you don’t have good facials. You don’t want to look dead on stage. Something that always helps the boys is makeup. They MUST wear it!

Normal Football v.s. Arena Football

When you go to see a football game there’s certain things you expect. You expect it to be outside or in a huge dome. You expect the field to have one hundred yards. You expect the team playing will be big. You expect there will not be very many fowl balls. However for Arena Football all these things are false.
When you go to see the Iowa Hawkeye’s, the Chicago Bears, or the Dallas Cowboys play football you always expect for the game to take place outside on a closed in field. Arena football is very different, last night when the Iowa Titans arena team played against the Green Bay arena team the game took place inside a hockey arena. They had coved the ice with green turf and Hung goal posts from the ceiling on either side. When I arrived and found they would be playing on an indoor field I was completely shocked for I didn’t know that football teams could play inside!
Another major difference from normal football and arena football is the field size. When you attend a football game you always expect the field to be one hundred yards long. However for arena football the field is only fifty yards long! The field was so short and thin I thought there was no way a football game could ever take place there. The field isn’t the only thing that was shrunk down in size. The goal posts on either side of the field were also much smaller that a goal post you would find on a traditional football field.
One thing I always expect when going to a football game is a big team! I’m not talking big people on the teams but just the number of people on the side wearing a uniform. For an NFL team fifty-three players is the maximum amount a team can have. So most teams have a big number of players pretty close to that. In arena football however the teams were very small! For arena football there is only allowed to be twenty active players! Another difference is when going to a NFL game you will see eleven people lining up on the field for each play. Unlike the NFL an arena football team only has eight people on the field at one time.
The last major difference in arena v.s. normal football is the path of which the ball travels. When you attend a football game you expect there to be minimal if any fowl balls. Now when I say fowl balls I mean balls that travel off the field and into the stands. In arena football this is not the case. At the one arena game I attended I saw not one but about five fowl balls! The teams would take a kick and WHAM! It would hit some lucky fan in the face! The teams would make a long pass and WACK! A very fortunate fan would have a new souvenir to bring home to their family. There were so many fowl balls is began to get a bit ridiculous!
So long story short a normal pro football team is VERY different from an arena football team. And truthfully I don’t know how anyone could prefer arena football over a good NFL game.

The Mermaid Chair

I decided to read The Mermaid Chair because I am a big fan of romance novels and the title of this book caught my eye. After reading the back cover and hearing from other people who have read it and liked it I decided I wanted to read it too. This book was challenging to read for a few reasons, there were quite a few words I didn’t know the meaning of, there was a religion I wasn’t familiar with, and the island where the book takes place had a lot of history that was hard to remember. Still, this book was a very good read and I would suggest it to anyone wanting a good romance novel.

The most difficult part of reading this book was keeping track of the religion practiced by the main characters. The mother in the story lived right next to a monastery and so religion was a very dominant part of the story line. For one they kept talking about multiple saints. Ones of which I had never heard of but were very important to their religion. They would explain the stories behind the saints once and then bring them up periodically throughout the book and some of the things they would say wouldn’t make sense until I would flip back and read the story belonging with the saint again. Also, throughout the book they would use jargon words like cowl or penance and I had too look up both the words to find that a cowl is a hooded garment worn by monks, and a penance a punishment undergone in token of penitence for sin.
Another difficult part of this book was the vocabulary. The author would often use words I didn’t know and I would have trouble understanding what the characters were saying or thinking. I would often look them up in order to better understand the story line. For example some of the words they used were battening, which means to feed gluttonously or greedily, Pagan, which is a person who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim, and perfunctory, which means performed as a routine duty; hasty and superficial.
The last challenge I had to over come while reading this book had to do with location. The island where this book takes place was located in the Caribbean islands, but in reality the island doesn’t actually exist. There was a lot of things you had to remember about the island in order to understand the book such as the history of the monastery on the island, and the Indian burial ground. There were also legends of mermaids coming up onto the island with out their fins and roaming about. There was also a story about how the mermaid chair came to be.
Even with all the challenges presented by this book it was still a very interesting read. I really enjoyed learning about monasteries and saints and also I’m just happy to have read another romance novel. I would defiantly recommend this book to others who enjoy a good love story and don’t mind learning some new vocabulary along the way. Over all this was a very good book and I never wanted to put it down.
