Good old Gary:)

The Christmas on my dad’s side of the family was very different this year. Just last year, a few days before spring break, my uncle died of cancer. His name was Gary and boy was he a character. The only real reason the holidays at the farm were fun, was because he was there. He always was able to make everybody feel good, and he was always in the best mood out of anyone. Even when he was battling with cancer, he still did normal things. He loved our visit to the Iowa State Fair eating anything we could find that was served on a stick! He always said the only good thing about the state fair was that you could eat your way through it.
In his last year, although he didn’t look his best, he still acted his best. One day while going into the store where his daughter worked, he saw a hat. It was similar to a fedora, but just a little different with a blue ribbon around the bottom. When asking about the hat someone replied that it had been there for a while and no one had bought it. They said it must take a special personality to pull off a hat like that. My uncle Gary then decided to put the hat on and just take a waltz around store wearing it. He decided that he could pull off the hat and so he bought it and wore it every chance he could get! Along with the hat he decided to add some other new accessories. When going in to buy a new pair of glasses he settled on a round pair similar to Harry Potters saying that they were fun and that he liked them. Later he decided to grow a little goatee just for kicks and giggles… gotta love good old Uncle Gary.
Because we were always used to the old quirks, that were just so Gary, this Christmas felt different. Crown Royal was always my Uncle’s favorite whisky and he loved making drinks and making sure that every one in the family, not including the kids, got several strong ones. This year his wife took over the tradition but even though she made them strong, it was mentioned many times that they couldn’t be stronger than Gary’s. It was strange opening presents without the silly remarks of my uncle, but we all still got through it having a good time. But no way will Christmas ever be the same without good old Uncle Gary.

Traditions

Every thing is changing. Every Christmas, in my family, is the same. I wake up, annoy my parents for awhile, yell at my siblings to get their butts out of bed, and sit on the steps waiting for all them to just get up and get out to the stairs so we can go open presents! We have many great traditions; I wouldn’t change any one of them for the world!
Every Christmas morning my parents wake up, and start getting ready for their day! My mom starts breakfast and my dad gets the video camera out. Shortly after they’re up and around, I wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to go see what Santa brought but there’s always just one problem. None of my siblings are ever awake! I walk around up stairs in my PJ’s, not bothering to be quiet just waiting for at least one of them to come out their door! After about twenty minutes of this, my dad grabs the video camera and we go jump on all their little sleeping heads and insist they must come out to the hall so we can go see if Santa came! My brother Ethan is usually the last awake and boy oh boy is it boring waiting for him!
First, we all sit on the top step of the stairs. We’re not allowed to go down until all of us are up and ready, so sometimes I find myself sitting alone for quite some time. Once we’re all there, my dad holds out the video camera asking us if we think Santa came, and what we think he brought us. This year however there was a question of a different color in the mix! He asked us what we were going to miss most about Christmas after my sister Elise gets married this summer. My oldest brother answered the question with, “It’s not like she’s going to die!”  We all started laughing! We continued this joke as we ran down the stairs to see just what Santa brought!
The first thing we do after getting down stairs is stake out where Santa put our pile of presents! After we find our “Christmas day perch” we all run and get our stockings, always finding a few signature Santa things. First we always get the same kind of candy. It’s in the shape of a ball and is all chocolate with a middle of a different flavor! Also we can always expect some band-aids, but they are never your normal tan colored band-aids. Somewhere in the world they sell band-Aids in tin cans and every year we all get band-aids with very different designs, such as bacon, pickles, or lips. Before we can open our real presents, we always eat breakfast and in every signature “Deborah Christmas Breakfast”, we always have a butter braid! They are so very delicious and I always look forward to eating them on Christmas
After breakfast we all go back to our spot in the family room and take turns opening our Christmas presents! It’s always fun seeing what everyone gets, but after seeing our sister opening many things relating to her wedding, all of our minds go back to the same question. What will we miss most after Elise gets married this summer?

I love my family :)

Christmas has to be my favorite time of the year. But it’s not just all the good food and presents that make this season so great, it’s the family and all the memories that are either reminisced or created around Christmas Day! For me the best time of the Christmas season is when all of my siblings are back in the house! It’s nice to have one or two of them home, but when all four of us are together, there is never a dull moment in the Craig house! We joke, we laugh, we eat my mom’s amazing creations, we sing…well… I sing, we watch movies, we play games, and we sleep, and then do everything all over again! It’s always a party!
This year, when my brother Ethan came home from college, he brought his girlfriend with him! Even though all my family was able to meet her the year before, it’s still nice to be able to get to know her a little better! She is so nice, cute, and smart, and she really added to our pre- Christmas celebrations. But as exciting as it was to get to know her even more, my favorite part was when I got to spend time with just my big brother alone! Because he goes to school in Georgia, he’s always so far away and I don’t get to see him nearly as much as I would like to. My other brother is a lone wolf in Iowa City. Even though he’s only thirty minutes away, it seems like I only see him once a year! Only Christmas makes all of these things better!
Now Christmas is over. In two days, both of my brothers will be back in their own houses and my sister who only lives about 5 minutes away, has already been gone for two days. It’s already getting quieter around the house. My siblings are all out hanging with their friends rather than hanging out with the family, and everyone is starting to lose that Christmas spirit! I guess I’ll just have to wait until next year so we can just start all over again!

Competition!

On a normal day-to-day basis, I don’t consider myself a gamer! Occasionally I’ll get out the PS2 or the Wii, but normally I just watch TV or movies when I’m bored! When family is home though, TV just doesn’t have enough excitement! This is when having two systems is worthwhile! My brothers and me are very competitive by nature and we love challenging each other at things that really don’t matter, just to see who will win! This year we centered on the Wii. We played Mario Party, Super Mario Brothers, and Mario Cart, all to see just who was “game” enough to win!
First we broke out the Super Mario Brothers! We ended up getting through about two worlds, by the end of break and my brothers definitely topped me on the skill level! I’m not bad, but I’m just not a guy! It takes a certain kind of person to be good at every kind of video game they play and I’m just not one of them! However, when we started playing Mario Cart, it was a totally different story!
When we decided to borrow the game Mario Cart from my neighbor, my brother Drew was all over me saying that I was going to get my butt kicked! He said I was going to lose every time, but I hardly think he is still saying such things now! After our first round we had played four races! In the first course, I got first place! In the second course, I was placed second while he was placed first. Although this is definitely not a bad ranking, it still gave him partial bragging rights, which I would definitely not allow! On both the other two races I was placed first and my bother instantly challenged a re- match! We then played another round of four races and I again got first in three out of four of them! Needless to say, I won the Mario Cart title!
The third game we played over break was Mario Party 8! If you have played this game, then you know it is about 99.9% luck and about .1% skill! Unfortunately my luck was not running free on the days we played this game! I always managed to roll ones and twos on the dice. Even though for much of the game I had the most points, I was never able to get to the star fast enough! Therefore, my brother Ethan took home the win on this game although I hardly think it counts since it took no real skill!
So even though I could only win one out of the three games played this year, I definitely think I am the over all winner! But I guess we will just have to wait until next year to see all of major video gaming skill!

Skuzzy Iowa Defends Their Honor

As proud Iowans, we were very upset with the article published by Stephen Bloom, posted in The Atlantic.  In his article, Bloom says many things about Iowa that my classmate and I thoroughly disagree with.  He rudely stereotypes Iowa, as a whole, and says many things about all Iowans that are not, in our opinion, very true.  Also in this article, he feels the need to imply that Maytag Company left the state because they could not succeed in Iowa, when in fact we are home to many flourishing companies.  Bloom also feels the need to take a stab at our universities, rural areas, and our “skuzzy cities”.
Although Iowa is known for our farming, not everyone living in our state works in the field.  Bloom states, “You’d never get a dog because you might just want to walk with the dog or to throw a ball for her to fetch.” When in fact my family has owned many dogs over the years and never once has one of them been used to hunt.  Bloom also says that deer are delicacies that families cherished, when my classmate and I have never, ever tried a deer meat burger or hunted one with a rifle.  According to the Gazette, between years 1991 and 2001 the percent of Iowan hunters dropped 20%, since then the number has continued to drop.  Clearly hunting is no longer, if even it was before, the favorite Iowa pastime.
As Bloom states, out of our “99 counties, 88 are classified as rural”.  Even if this were true, as the President of the University of Iowa, Sally Mason, retaliates to Blooms article by saying, “What defines Iowans are their deeds and actions and not some caricature.  When I travel the state, what I see is a land that is rich not only because of it’s soil but because of how its people are grounded.”  We agree with Sally Mason because in our years of living as residents of Iowa, we have grown up with people opening the door and not feeling the need to lock our doors.  Just because the majority of our state may be rural does not mean that we lack the kindness and dignity of the people of other states around us.  As Lynda Waddington tries to explain in her article to The Atlantic” Gut- instinct recoil from rudeness or public conflict that plagues Iowans.” This may be the reason why so many Iowans may be offended by Blooms words.  Because we have a reputation of being respectful of others, we as a people do not appreciate the rudeness being thrown at us.  We expect respect in return by people who most definitely do not know everyone in our state personally.
In Bloom’s article he states, “In a perfect world, no way would Iowa ever be considered representative of America, or even a small part of it”. However later in his article he says, “Iowa has more high school graduates than 49 other states.” If we were not able to represent any part of America then why would we have more graduates! Would you rather have representation from a state with a low amount of high school graduates or a state whose education system is flourishing and has the most high school graduates in the country? Also in Bloom’s article he talks about how University of Iowa has been infiltrated by large masses of Chinese students. The way Bloom’s tone comes across in his article makes it seem like a bad thing that the University of Iowa has so many foreign students. But in reality doesn’t that show just how great an education system Iowa has and that all of the foreign people would rather learn in Iowa than any other state in the country? In a University of Iowa news release, they explain the reasoning for integrating international students into the campus. This integration is a good thing because it helps the university to expand their international relations and give their students world connections. This also helps give students more opportunities to experience cultures other than their own.
In Blooms article, when he says that Whirlpool closed the Maytag plant in Newton, Iowa after more that a century, he implies that Iowa cannot maintain large businesses. However, Iowa is home to businesses like PepsiCo, Rockwell Collins, and Principal Financial Group. Bloom also mentions the misfortunes the Postville meat packing plant went through a few years ago. Although in Lynda Waddington’s article published in The Atlantic, she shares with us that the plant has reopened under new ownership. This just goes to show how Iowa has the ability to pick itself back up after going through tough times. We have the resources and the ability to rebuild ourselves in times of need.
The points Bloom made in his article about Iowa had some truths, but also many falsified statements. We do not all work on farms and love to hunt. We are very nice and courteous people. We have a good education system and universities that link us with the rest of the world. We also have successful companies and a sense of self-discipline. Bloom really doesn’t have any ground to stand on while bashing our caucus.  It sounds to me that Iowa is an excellent place to show the first opinion of candidacy for President. We are good people with good intentions and good backgrounds and we don’t deserve this slander. In our caucus, we are simply opening the country up to the coming election and showing the opinion of one, singular state. The candidate we choose will by no means be the definite candidate for election in November.

Clara!

When I was only 6 my soon to be best friend moved in down the street she looked kind of funny with her extremely short bob cut and her white as snow colored skin but still I was able to get to know her and be her best friend! Even now 10 years later we are still best friends. We still hang out on the weekends, tell each other everything, and read each other’s mind. Only now instead of playing with Barbie’s when we are bored we quote movies!

Living in Iowa definitely has its down sides. All we have to do for fun here is watch corn grow. Because this is often boring we resorted to watching movies instead! Now after all these years of our brains being rotted away by dream works we finally have memorized all of our favorite movies from front to back! One day when we were bored we just started quoting funny movies! We decided to make a game out of it. We would pick a movie and go back and forth saying funny quotes from that movie. The first person that ran out of quotes would lose!

Our favorite movie is defiantly Elf! And trust me quotes from that movie do not run out as quickly as some other movies. Some of the most commonly quoted consist of “Buddy the elf what’s your favorite color?” or “I'm singing I'm in a store and I'm siiiiiingiiiiing! I'm in a store and I'm siiiiiingiiiiing!”

Sometimes people don’t know the movie that we are quoting or they think we are weird for quoting movies. However my friend and me are usually laughing so hard by the end nothing anyone can say or do could possibly ruin or moods! Isn’t life just dandy when you got a best friend to giggle with!

Ideal best friend quality's!

I love having a best friend! Always having someone to talk to or to vent to! Someone who is always there to answer your questions or just to chill on a Saturday night! Someone who you can trust to hate who you hate or tell you an honest opinion on how an outfit looks.

!.) A good best friend always knows how to listen! They let you tell them anything you want and then don’t tell anyone else unless you say its ok. Listening is important because everyone needs to vent and if you have no one to vent too then what’s the point!

2.) Second a best friend always has to have your back. A good friend always stands up for their friends and doesn’t turn around to stab them in the back. Honesty also comes with this. They don’t say they staying home to do homework and then go out with your boyfriend, or with just anyone at all. They have to be honest enough to tell you when your butt looks big or your boobs look completely fake in you push up bra.

3.) They cant be big headed. If your friend only cares about themselves then you probably will end up not being happy! If your friend is only concerned with being cool or improving their status you can bet that the second a popular girl asks her to hang out she wont be saying no to hang out with you. Its important to always make others feel just as important as you because feeling unimportant cant really lower ones self-esteem and a good friend should be building you up not breaking you down!

4.) Probably the most important thing in friendship liking a person for who they are. When you are with your best friend you have to be able to be your complete self. You shouldn’t have to worry about them judging you for being weird or too crazy. Being yourself should be the answer to every problem. Just as they should enjoy being around you, you must enjoy being around them because if you don’t things with not end up all warm and fuzzy.
